Lauderdale

When southern Florida resident Nathan Radlich’s house was burglarized recently, thieves ignored his wide screen plasma TV, his VCR, and even left his Rolex watch. What they did take, however, was ‘a generic white cardboard box filled with a grayish-white powder.’ (That’s at least the way the police report described it.)

A spokesman for the Fort Lauderdale police said, “That it looked similar to high grade cocaine and they’d probably thought they’d hit the big time.”

Later, Nathan stood in front of the numerous TV cameras and pleaded with the burglars, “Please return the cremated remains of my sister, Gertrude. She died three years ago.”

The next morning, the bullet-riddled corpse of a local drug dealer known as Hoochie Pevens was found on Nathan’s doorstep. The cardboard box was there too; about half of Gertrude’s ashes remained. Scotch taped to the box was this note which said: “Hoochie sold us the bogus blow, so we wasted Hoochie. Sorry we snorted your sister. No hard feelings. Have a nice day.”

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://pedw.blogspot.com/2008/05/burglary-in-ft-lauderdale.html' title='Burglary in Ft. Gritty, visceral and about as subtle as a flamethrower duel at a gas station, Pierce Edens and the Dirty Work is handily one of the defining bands in the current Asheville music scene. It would be easy to view Edens and company as a band to scuff your boots to, but if you listen a bit more closely, it quickly becomes evident that Edens is also a truly gifted songwriter. Songs like “Holiday” and “Creeping Vines” actually border on the kind of rough-hewn brilliance that mainstream country could benefit from. That said, our suggested starting track is the dust-kicking, proudly crowing anthem “Let It Rain,” which you can listen to on the group’s MySpace page.”

Read the original.

Pierce smells like cabbage and hoagies

During our recent recording session at Landslide studios in Asheville, NC, the hallway and engineer room consistently smelled like Subway and cabbage thanks to Pierce and his un-kept ways. We have the tracks but no name. We have all of the gear, but no sound as of yet. We have the boys and we have Adam Johnson and friends. We will have something by the end of the week. Well, something might not be accurate.

We will be recording all week at Landslide Studio (not an open invitation). We have a slew of songs to get down and plenty of coffee to do so. Although we won’t be following Matt Smith and the Matt Smiths down that road of free jazz nor our bass players side project of sub-urban house music, we are taking things a lot further than the last album and think we will all be pleasantly surprised.

In bigger news, we have a show at the Westville Pub on Saturday, March 29, 2008. Since this is going to be at the end of our week of recording the rough tracks for the new album, we thought it appropriate to continue the recording. Here is your chance to be recorded live and be on the next album! We are going to be getting some help from all of you on Saturday with some back up singing for one of the new albums tracks. We won’t say which one, but it will be later on in the evening most likely, so come out and stay out.

See you there…

Bass player spreads wings, falls flat on his face. No one around to pick up pieces.

Pierce Edens and the Dirty Work bass player, one-man marketing department, and the self proclaimed “only band member who has his shit together”, recently broke out of his bass player mold to become the front man for the one man band “Gamelan” with their/his first solo, a self-named single, Gamelan. Not knowing any other instruments (or any instrument according to multi-instrumentalist Matthew “Beany Maters” Smith), Michael relied on the tools in his computer geek arsenal, including Final Cut, Garage Band, and his uncanny sense of bad rhythm. He also spent 15 minutes searching the internet to try and find more useless instruments, but then something shiny distracted him.
Although he is part of a band that has received several wonderful accolades from the adoring press and music industry, as with almost every single solo project, his music sucks. Thinking the project a joke, best friend and clothing expert Galen Holland laughed in his face. Pierce told him to quit his job. And leave town. His loving pregnant wife told him never to play that racket around their child or she would leave him. He couldn’t tell if she was serious.
After a brief run on Casey Kasem’s American Top 40, the song is now only available as a bootleg from Japan or on the Pierce Edens and the Dirty Work website. LISTEN TO THE TRACK HERE. Seen mulling about in his wood shop/basement/recording studio/cave, Michael has not picked up a bass since driving the front man and his wife to the airport.
“It’s bad enough that he had to take a ‘vacation’ to the Southwest for 10 days, but did he really have to take my wife with him. He then returned to his wood shop/basement/recording studio/cave and began building something resembling a large coffin inlaid with mother of pearl figurines.

Matt Smith's Graffiti

Matt Smith was caught defacing drummer David Mack’s truck with a color of spray paint known as “Baboon Ass Pink”. He was overheard using various expletives to show his unnerving rage. To those at the scene, the bass player seemed to like it.
Later, Pierce was seen throwing a bottle of Desani water and screaming, “I told you, I only drink F*&@!%$ Fiji water, you stupid F#&@!”. After several minutes of rustling the rugged singer from his slumber, he was heard to mutter something about “the sheep not minding nearly as much as that damn ol’ farmer did”, and was seen to stumble into his condo where he was later seen sleeping on the balcony awning. Michael set this thing up for me, so we'll give it a shot see if it fits. It's been a big week for us. Aside from the simple regular day to day booking stuff (we just signed up for an opening spot for David Childers and the Modern Don Juans @ the Grey Eagle on November 21st) we got some good news back from the Asheville Area Arts Council. They have been so gracious as to grant us some money for our next CD release! We're in the very preliminary stages of putting our act together, so as to prep up a new full length album. Lord knows we've got the songs for it... Just a matter of setting 'em all in order. That grant money will come in awful handy. Thanks...
Otherwise, gearing up for the Town Pump this friday. Gonna be a good one. We're gonna put something together to benefit Seth D. Stone, a friend of ours who recently suffered a head injury. Come out if you can. Hope to see yall there.
p.

First one...

Just setting this blog up for Pierce and the boys to keep their fans up to date.
